Had you ever visited a retirement home or assisted living community?
you may have thought how much it looks like a hotel or motel, with a large and spacious dining room, Handicap equipped front desk, recreation room, and mostly with a swimming pool.
Increasing numbers of Motels and hotels are being modified into retirement homes or senior housing communities, reflecting a rapid growth among North America’s senior population as baby boomers retiring.
When we look at similarities, both establishment types: share a general manager, chef, servers, reception … both have sales departments, and activities are very important. Employees in both industries need to show a degree of empathy and concern for their residents and tenants.
Although there is a possible visible fit for hotels to be converted into seniors housing, some small changes do need to be made to become compatible for requirements as per regulations (as links attached).
According to online sources when a hotel becomes a retirement home, the entrance door to the rooms often have to be expanded in order to accommodate the space needed for two wheelchairs to pass through or similar, and hotel rooms often have to be customized to meet the demands of an aging resident like more Handicap friendly environments.
Having said it : There are more motels and hotels are being converted into retirement homes and assisted living facilities. This can be an opportunity for Motel-Hotel owners to trend in to new different business from renting to caring…

Legislation and Regulations
The RHRA is responsible for administering the Retirement Homes Act, 2010 (Act). The Act establishes the RHRA and sets out its role, responsibilities and powers. The Act also contains care and safety standards and other requirements applying to licensed retirement homes in Ontario. Regulations under the Act provide additional standards and requirements for licensed homes, and requirements relating to the RHRA’s administration of the Act.

The Ontario government recently proclaimed regulations under the Retirement Homes Act, 2010 allowing the RHRA to open for licensing on April 15, 2012. Further information can be found here.
